  • Contents: The book starts in 1924. Walt is an orphan and a very special child. Mr Yehudi takes him away from his uncle to teach him how to levitate and to become a flying Wunderkind. It takes him three years until he masters flight and gives his first performance. But life isn´t easy and Walt experiences many different people and has many different jobs in the next years after he has to stop his career as an artist, because of heavy headaches he gets every time after flying.
  • Review:
    This  novel was recommended to me from by good friend of mine, who has read it before and love the story and the way it is told. So did I – the most of it. It is wonderful to accompany Walt and Master Yehudi during a time of their lives. My tears were dripping at end of the page where Mr. Yehudi wants Walt to shoot him and Walt isn´t able to. A very sad part of the story and I think that the story could better have ended here. The part of the book without Mr. Yehudi is the part I didn´t like so much. But it is nevertheless a good book to read till the end. Probably I would have liked it even more if the language hadn´t been so hard for me to understand and I had known more about the times and conditions in which the story takes place. But although I had have my problems it is my opinion, that it is a great book on the dream of human flight. It makes me think about the power of try and error and even love in a special way.

Ken Follett – The Fall of Giants

    Billy Twice (his real name is Billy Williams)  is a thirteen-year-old boy, who goes to work in the coal mine underneath the fictional Welsh town of Aberowen in June 1911 for his first time. This is the beginning oft the novel. Three years later the main story begins: Earl Teddy „Fitz“ Fitzherbert of Aberowen, gives a party with many powerful people from around the world as his guests. For example there are Maud Fitzherbert, Fitz’s liberal sister, the German Graf Walter von Ulrich, his Austrian cousin Graf Robert von Ulrich, the Amrican Gus Dewar, a close adviser to the President Woodrow Wilson, Bea Fitzherbert, Fitz’s wife, a Russian Princess an King George V and his wife. Their lives and those of their families are followed by the reader during the coming  years. Other important characters are the two Russian orphans Gregori and Lev Pushkov, who work in a railway factory, and have good reason not to like Bea an the rest of her family. The book ends in January 1924, so it plays during the time of World War 1, the Russian Revolution and the woman´s suffragette movement.
  • Review:
    I liked this book very much. It is brilliant, how Follett brings in the five families an combines their lives. So history becomes alive and you can understand how it all fits together.  I like it that Follett explains the time from the different perspectives of the five families, which each belong to a different country: America, England / Scotland, Germany and Russia. I am impressed how he manages to mix their lives and makes the reader understand how difficult life was in this time. The big, exciting, historical narrative is told by telling many little personal and individual stories of the people. I like the love-stories between Ethel an Fitz as well as the one of Maud and Walter most. I love the many little details of their live and the way Follett tells them in a lovely way. It is a good mixture of love and war and I, who normally isn´t very interested in history, likes the way  it is presented here as well as in many other books by Ken Follett. Although it was a very long book, especially for persons like me, who are not as good in the English language, I am happy I decided to read it, because it was easily understood and a wonderful story. So I am locking forward to read the next part of the trilogy and experience, how the stories go on and the families come together again.

Granny Aching’s example and the memory of her strength helps her to win against the Queen oft the fairy with a frying pan as her only weapon. But she is supported by pictsies, the Wee Fee Men or Nac Mac Feegles, how they call themselves. Little blue men, who like to fight, steal an drink. The Feegles want her for their new hag, successor of Granny Aching, Tiffany’s Grandma. They help Tiffany to free her brother and teach her what her duties are as witch of her land, the Chalk.
    2. Eleven years old Tiffany learns, what it means to be a real witch. Her teacher is Miss Level, a woman with two bodies.
    3. Dancing with the Wintersmith has big consequences for thirteen years old Tiffany Aching, because the Wintersmith has fallen in love with her. She needs the help of the Feegles and of Summer, to let Spring come back to the Chalk.
    4. Tiffany is a grown up witch now and she has to fight against an evil creature.
  • Review:
    First I read the second book „Wintersmith“, which I liked most of all four books, after I knew all of them. But I would recommend to read them in the correct order. And I liked them all an the way the story develops while Tiffany is growing up. I like the Feegles very much, how they talk an act. And I love Horace the cheese.

Hera Lind – Himmel und Hölle

    Dr. Konstanze Kuchenmeister ist eine Gynäkologin, die nie aufgibt. Kurz nach der Geburt ihrer Zwillinge wird bei ihr Gebärmutterhalskrebs festgestellt. Aber sie lässt sich nicht unterkriegen und kämpft, baut parallel zu vier Kindern und Chemotherapie ihre eigene Praxis auf. Doch dann kommt der nächste Schock.
  • Rezension:
    Dieser Roman hat mich tief bewegt, besonders weil er auf einer wahren Begebenheit beruht. Wäre die Geschichte ausgedacht, würde man vielleicht sagen, wie unrealistisch das alles ist und das die Autorin etwas übertreibt. Da man aber weiß, dass es Dr. Konstanze Kuchen-meister wirklich gibt,  ist man tief  beeindruckt. An mehr als einer Stelle kamen mir die Tränen, so sehr war ich von dem bewegt, was ich las und wie diese Frau kämpft und nie aufgibt, egal, was ihr auch zustößt und wie dunkel es in ihrem Leben gerade aussieht. Sie schaut immer auf das Licht und gibt die Hoffnung nie auf – ein sehr beeindruckende, mutige und kämpferische Frau, die wir hier kennenlernen. Hera Lind beschreibt ihre Geschichte auf eine fesselnde aber trotzdem sehr einfühlsame Art und Weise. Ich denke, dass ihr Buch Menschen Hoffnung und Kraft geben kann und auf eine behutsame Art und Weise darauf aufmerksam macht wie wichtig eine Impfung gegen Gebärmutterhalskrebs ist. Es macht aber auch Mut, nie aufzugeben und darauf zu hoffen, dass es immer einen Weg gibt, egal welche Schicksalsschläge auch auf einen einprasseln mögen. Alles in allem finde ich, ist es ein sehr lesenswertes Buch, in dem eine Menge  Kraft steckt!

    Es ist mitten im Sommer und eine Mutter tötet, ohne selbst Hand anzulegen, ihre zwei Kinder. Sie verlässt die Beiden und will eigentlich nicht lange wegbleiben. Dann kommt es aber anders, es gelingt ihr nicht zurück zu finden.
  • Rezension:
    Ich finde diese Geschichte sehr bedrückend, besonders weil Kumpfmüller sie anhand von Motiven eines realen Falles erzählt. Ich finde es sehr erschreckend, sie lesen, was in der Mutter vorgeht und wie ihre Kinder am Ende sterben. Denn der Autor schildert das meiner Meinung nach sehr deutlich und detailliert. Wäre die Tat selbst nicht so unglaublich, wäre man als Leser fast gezwungen sich in diese Frau hinein zu versetzen. Das Buch macht mir sehr nachdenklich darüber, wie man solche grausamen Vorkommnisse verhindern könnte und wie man Eltern und gerade Alleinerziehende unterstützen müsst. Meiner Meinung nach schildert der Autor das ganze Geschehen „zu leicht“ , so als wäre es „normal“ und fast nachvollziehbar. Es kommt mir nicht deutlich genug heraus wie schlimm die Folgen des Handeln dieser Frau sind und das so etwas eben hoffentlich nicht der Normalität (was auch immer das sein mag) entspricht. Außerdem finde ich persönlich so einen Fall nicht geeignet um daraus einen Roman zu machen, aber das mögen andere Leser ganz anders empfinden.

    Diesen Buch erzählt rückblickend die Geschichte, wie es dazu kam, dass Helene ihren siebenjährigen Sohn 1945 allein an einem kleinen Bahnhof in Vorpommern sitzen lässt.
  • Rezension:
    Die Geschichte ist sehr schwer, ich finde zu schwer. Mir gelingt es nicht, ihr und den Beweggründen Helenes zu folgen. Auch  die Sprache  und insbesondere die Art und Weise wie die Geschichte erzählt wird,  finde ich schwer zugänglich. Trotzdem finde ich es mutig, sich an dieses Thema heran zu wagen und das Buch macht nachdenklich. Ich würde es aber nicht noch einmal lesen.

    Eine Sammlung kurzer Texte und Gedichte zu den Themen „Wer bin ich?“, „Was bestimmt mich?“, „Wie /wer will ich sein?“, „Zweifel“, „Nachdenken über Gott und den Glauben“ und „Gott liebt mich“.
  • Rezension:
    Dieser Band begleitet mich schon mehr als zehn Jahre und ich nehme ihn immer wieder gern zur Hand, besonders in Phasen, in denen das Leben und ich , es nicht einfach miteinander haben. So war es auch das Gedicht „Der Traum vom leichten Leben“, dass mich sehr tief berührt und zum Kauf dieser Sammlung bewogen hat. Aber auch viele andere Texte haben mich und meine Freude, denen ich gern mal einen Text daraus vorlese bzw. mit auf den Weg gebe in schwierigen Lebenslagen trösten können. Aber man kann dieses Buch natürlich auch an leichten Tagen zur Hand nehmen und sich davon berühren und zum nachdenken anregen lassen. Sie haben mir z.B. durch das Gedicht „Ich bin…“ dabei geholfen, mich selbst (wieder-) zu finden und z.B. durch das Gedicht „Gelassenheit“ eben diese zu finden, auch wenn das Leben gerade mal wieder sehr turbulent ist. Es ist wirklich sehr zu empfehlen – nicht zum Durchlesen von vorne bis hinten, sondern zum immer mal wieder rein schauen und langjähriger Begleiter sein.
